timesearch_prism_680TIME SEARCH’S BACK COVER BLURB:

In the wake of a recent wave of violence, TEMCO employees are left reeling. While some of the staff are put into hiding, others are left behind to discover the true identity of the mysterious nemesis who is determined to destroy them all. While Crystal, Marc, and Zeke search for clues to unravel the mystery of his real name, their enemy is lurking in the shadows searching for TEMCO’s missing leaders. It’s a race against the clock! And as the hours and seconds tick away, it’s anyone’s guess whose search will be completed first. It’s a classic battle of good versus evil, and the stakes couldn’t be higher!

* * *

Taking a deep breath, Crystal entered Drake’s apartment with Marc and Agent Ruthford. Her mind kept flashing back to that horrible moment when she’d regained consciousness and realized she was locked inside a burning building.

“We’ve already searched the premises,” Agent Ruthford said, walking to the center of the room. “We didn’t find anything.”

Attempting to forget that Drake had tried to burn her alive, Crystal replied, “We’re searching for different things. I’m sure Drake left us clues to his identity. With his ego, he would’ve thought it amusing.”

Studying her surroundings, she shuddered. Although at first glance, Drake’s home was like many other student apartments—something was a little off. It was as if she could feel an undertone of evil oozing from the walls.

Marc came and stood by her side. “What’s bothering you?”

“Everything,” she said. “It’s all an act. Drake owns everything in this place, but nothing is reflecting him. He’s deliberately picked out every piece of furniture to bolster his fake identity.”

“You notice something else, don’t you?” Marc said.

She nodded. Walking across the room, she studied the framed photographs on the bookshelves. “He doesn’t know any of these people. They aren’t interacting with him.” Moving to the fireplace, she studied the picture of Drake on the mantle. “This is the only real picture in the room.”

Leaning closer, she took in each detail. In the picture, Drake was smiling and holding a red flag in one hand and pointing to the ground with the other. He was dressed all in yellow. Crystal gasped.

Marc was immediately at her side. “What is it?”

“Something awful,” she whispered, feeling a chill running down her back. She forced herself to point at the red flag. “For ancient Romans, a red flag was a signal for battle.” She pointed at Drake’s yellow clothes. “In medieval Spain, executioners wore yellow. Drake’s telling us that he’s coming for battle and that he’s going to be the executioner.”

Marc’s eyes filled with comprehension. “Drake isn’t just searching for a Wave Trapper. He wants to kill people.” He hesitated. “But we knew that, didn’t we?”

An uncontrollable shiver ran through her body. “There are many ways to die. The Spanish Inquisition was known for its cruelty and torture. Drake’s telling us that Phoebe wasn’t a fluke. He’s planning on being brutal.” She turned to Agent Ruthford. “Has this picture been moved?”

He shook his head.

Turning back to the photograph, she studied Drake’s body position. It looked as if his finger was pointing toward the carpet. Studying the angle, Crystal fell to her knees and gave the carpet a tug. A six-inch square came up in her hands. Lines from the poem “Revenge” were written on the floorboards.

Marc took a picture of the disturbing verse. “The meaning seems clear enough.”

“Yes.” Crystal shuddered, clenching and unclenching her fists. “Drake thinks we deserve to suffer.” Turning, she approached a table that held a wilted flower arrangement. “Amaranthus caudatus, rosemary, and star of Bethlehem,” she murmured, fingering a wilted blossom.

“Is that important?” Marc asked.

Nodding, Crystal pointed at the drooping red plumes cascading down the vase. “Amaranthus caudatus is commonly called love lies bleeding. In the language of flowers, it represents hopelessness. The purple spears are rosemary. Rosemary represents remembrance.”

“What about these flowers?” Marc asked, nudging a wilted, white blossom.

Crystal picked one up. “Star of Bethlehem represents reconciliation. The flowers show we’re on the right track. When he steals a Wave Trapper, Drake’s going to reconnect with his old love.”

Seeing nothing further, she entered Drake’s bedroom. It was neat, tidy, and very masculine. Hugging her arms across her chest, she stood in the middle of the floor and looked around. Again, everything seemed normal, but something felt off.

“What do you see?” Marc asked gently.

“It’s what I don’t see,” she replied. “This room is twelve inches shorter than the living room.”

Moving to the northern wall, she spotted a blotch of ink. Her mind recoiled in horror. Springing back, she stuttered, “T-this is a false wall. Drake’s hiding something behind it.”

“I think you’re right about the dimensions of the room,” Agent Ruthford said. “I’ll have my team check it out.”

As Agent Ruthford contacted his agents, Marc touched her arm. Crystal jumped nearly out of her skin.

“What’s wrong?” he asked. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Can’t you feel the evil in this room?” she replied. “It’s oppressive.”

Marc looked around. “Everything looks normal to me.”

“Everything is a lie.” Running her hands over her arms, she whispered in a voice full of horror, “I don’t want to be here when that wall comes down.”

“Why? What do you think is behind there?” he asked.

“Nothing good.” She pointed at the tiny, black stain on the wall. “That says it all.”

Kneeling down, Marc studied the blotch. “It seems like an ordinary stain to me.”

“It’s not ‘ordinary’ at all,” she replied. “Look closer. It’s a black half-circle with one short line and one long line dangling down. It’s the ancient Egyptian symbol for Amenta. It was used to represent where the Egyptians buried their dead.”

Glorious Spring and Great News!

tulipsThere’s something GLORIOUS about spring. This week, I took a walk and drank in the sights. I saw new grass peeking up through the earth and robins building their nests. The tulips were blooming in the garden, and the huge snowdrift that’s been occupying a corner of my yard is almost gone. Looking around at the beauty of spring, I felt so wonderful that I just had to sing—not well, mind you, but LOUDLY and JOYFULLY.

grass and snowAs I walked, I began thinking about the seasons and how they represent certain times in our lives. I’ve talked about how my illness and quarantine were like a long winter, and I’ve talked about how spring always comes. When I think back on quarantine, I can remember the long, weary, painful days. Seven years is a long time, and there were days when I thought I’d never be free—but I’ve learned through experience that even the longest winters come to an end. I think there’s such security in knowing that winter’s snows ALWAYS give way to spring’s lovely floral hues.

tree blossomFriends, as I write this, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and joy. You see, my personal spring keeps on unfolding. You all know that during quarantine I wrote the first six books in The Time Counselor Chronicles. The first book in the series, Time Tsunami, was released on January 15, 2016. Having Time Tsunami published by Prism Book Group was such a blessing, but today, I can report that the blessings haven’t stopped there. Are you ready for some wonderful “springtime” news???

My editor has given me the official release date of my second book! Time Trap is being published on June 17, 2016! And if that isn’t enough, I’ve just received a contract from Prism Book Group for the third book in my series, Time Search.

robinWhen I was ill and in quarantine, I thought my winter would never end, but God brought me through that difficult season and ushered me into a glorious spring. I don’t understand many things, but there’s one thing I know: God will absolutely make EVERYTHING turn out for our good. In Joel 2:25, God promises to restore the years the locust have eaten. I hung onto that promise during quarantine, and it has proven to be true. If I hadn’t been ill, I never would’ve written my books. God has a good plan for each of our lives, and when we trust Him, even the things that seem horrible, puzzling, and hard will become blessings in the end. That’s the promise of spring. That’s what I think about every time I see a blade of green grass or a robin building a nest.

Friends, if you’re in the middle of winter in your life, please don’t despair. Please don’t give up. I know that you may be weary, and hurt, and extremely tired of the storm you’re facing—but your storm WILL end. Spring WILL come. Everything is going to be okay. And when your spring finally comes, it will be GLORIOUS!!!

meadow“‘There is yet hope!’ [says the Lord.] ‘I promise right now, I will repay you two mercies for each of your woes!’” Zechariah 9:12b

For surely you have a wonderful future ahead of you. There is hope for you yet!” Proverbs 23:18

Embrace the Chaos

Dear Friends,

During my second year of quarantine, I came down with a severe case of cabin fever, and when I say severe, I mean SEVERE!! Quarantine was REALLY getting on my nerves. As I focused on the things I couldn’t do, my discontentment grew. Some days, I would pace between the table and the couch clenching and unclenching my fists while rehearsing my list of “forbidden” activities. I can’t drive. I can’t go to church. I can’t have lunch with friends. I can’t go to a movie. I can’t go to the grocery store. I can’t go to the mailbox when cars are on the road. I can’t go for a walk when the neighbor is running her dryer. I can’t…I can’t…

One day, the frustration I felt exploded into a burst of rage. I couldn’t stand being trapped inside for one more second. I stopped pacing and stormed out the door. I skirted around the back of the house to avoid a running lawnmower and made my way through a hay field. Suddenly, a sickening sweet smell wrapped around me. My neighbor was running her dryer and the stench of scented fabric sheets was heavy in the air. Immediately, I held my breath, but it was too late. Searing pain exploded through my skull. The pain was so strong it made me stagger. It felt like sharpened pencils were being drilled into my eyes. I knew I should run back home to safety, but my anger wouldn’t let me. Still holding my breath, I stumbled toward the lake. My lungs cried out for oxygen. Black dots began dancing in front of my narrowing vision. I still refused to breathe. I knew I had to make it past the smell.

When I got to the fence line, I took a cautious breath. I was out of the noxious fencecloud. Frustrated, angry thoughts battered my brain. It was so UNFAIR that a BLASTED fabric sheet could hold me hostage in my own home. My frustration mounted. Gasping for air, I held onto a fence pole until the black dots stopped dancing. And then, being the incredibly intelligent person that I am, I kicked the fence pole just as hard as I could. Minutes later, after removing my shoe to see if I had broken my pinky toe, I continued up toward the lake. As I walked, my list continued rolling through my thoughts. I can’t drive. I can’t go to church. I can’t…I can’t…

When I reached the lake, I skirted the water and walked along the East shore toward the hollow where so many bonfires had been held. I had lake treeenjoyed coaching Bible Quiz, and I could almost hear the laughter of my quiz kids as they cooked their hotdogs. My lips twisted. Coaching was something else I had been forced to give up. As I looked at the blackened ring left behind from the last bonfire, I realized that the logs that had been circling the fire pit were all helter-skelter. Rather than being in a neat, orderly ring, they were turned in every direction, and some of them had been rolled several feet away. Anger boiled inside me. Maybe I couldn’t go to church or a restaurant, but I could certainly put those stupid logs back in order.

bull 1I went to work, rolling stumps and dragging logs. One of the logs was a monster. It had a large branch coming off one side that stuck several feet in the air. It was murder to move. I could only drag it inches at a time before I had to rest. During one of my rest breaks, I noticed the bull in the pasture staring at me. He was about 100 feet away, and I didn’t pay him much mind. I had been around cattle my whole life. Bulls didn’t bother me. I continued working.

I wasn’t nearly as strong as I had once been, so it took me a couple of hours, but bull 2with a single-minded, stubborn determination, I dragged and rolled every single log back into place. As I stood and surveyed my work, I felt a glow of accomplishment. As I was silently congratulating myself, I saw a slight movement out of the corner of my eye. I turned around, and my heart froze. The bull was standing about eight feet away. His head was down and he was pawing the ground. I was a farm girl. I knew the signs of trouble. The bull walked forward with a stiff-legged gait. He tossed his head and bellowed. I frantically looked around. The ground was flat. There was nothing to hide behind. No one was around to help. I was on my own. The bull bellowed again. He shook his head and pawed dirt. I knew something bad was about to happen. Frantic, half-formed prayers pummeled my brain.

The bull came closer, his eyes locked with mine. He was just a few feet away. I could see his muscles bunching as he prepared to charge. Suddenly, as he went past it, the branch attached to the largest log brushed his ear. With a bellow, the bull turned on the log. Putting his head down, he hooked the branch and tossed the log into the air. The sight was something I will never forget. I knew how heavy that log was, and the bull was tossing it around like it weighed next to nothing.

bull 3The bull turned his back on me and continued attacking the log. Quickly, I backed away and made it to the electric fence. Hopping over it, I ran through the field. When I got to a place of relative safety, I turned and looked back at the lake. In the distance, I could see the bull continuing to attack the logs around the fire pit. He slung them around, sending them rolling. He tossed some of them in the air, others he kicked all the way into the lake.

My knees felt like jelly. I sat down with a thud (right in a patch of sandburs) and tried to stop shaking. Suddenly, the Lord’s soft voice spoke to me. He said simply, “Embrace the chaos.”  Sitting there, picking sandburs out of my jeans, I tried to figure out what God meant. Suddenly, it hit me. The logs were like my life, and the bull was my illness. I was fighting what was going on. I was stubbornly clinging to the desire for things to go back to the way they once were. I was literally fighting something that was too strong for me—something that was kicking the order right out of my orderly life and forcing me to deal with a new way of living. Embrace the chaos. Maybe I needed to stop trying to force my life into its old pattern and start opening my eyes to what was new…

I made my way back to the house, holding my breath through the scented cloud of my neighbor’s fabric sheets. When I got inside, I sat down at the kitchen table and made a list of things that I could do. Projects that could only be accomplished through time and isolation. Over the next several years of quarantine, embracing the chaos became my new norm. I memorized massive amounts of scripture—committing whole books of the Bible to memory. I researched my family’s genealogy and scanned every family photo I could find into the computer. And then I began to write. And write. And write.Time Counselor Chronicles 2 I finished my first book, Time Tsunami, and promptly wrote Time Trap. I didn’t stop there. I spent anywhere from 8-18 hours at my computer penning my novels. Soon I completed Time Search, Time Awakening, Time Inferno, and Time Nightmare.

Embrace the chaos…

When I look back at that day at the lake, I realize that it was a turning point in my life. It was the day when I realized that some things are simply out of our control. Some things just can’t be changed. It’s our choice whether we want to engage in a futile battle with the bull in the pasture, or whether we want to embrace the chaos and discover new ways of thinking, of working, of living. It is our choice.

“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:19Time Counselor Chronicles 1

My book series, The Time Counselor Chronicles, consists of eight novels all revolving around the same cast of characters. The books are Christian romantic suspense, and they contain time travel twists engineered to keep my readers guessing! I had a blast writing my books, and I hope you will enjoy them. The first three books in the series, Time Tsunami, Time Trap, and Time Search are currently under contract with Prism Book Group.

Time Tsunami

Time Tsunami (Book 1 of The Time Counselor Chronicles)

Love turns deadly when a serial killer confronts a beautiful time surfer from the future. . .

Gil Montgomery, a cadet in the Temporal Counseling Program, can’t wait to pass her field exam and become a professional time surfer. The TEMCO program targets death-row offenders for time-based counseling while they’re children.  For her exam, Gil will travel twenty-four years into the past to counsel ten-year old Danny Winston before he murders his abusive babysitter, Rick Olsen.  Preventing the stabbing should stop the chain of events leading to Danny’s eventual execution.

Gil’s assignment seems simple until her adviser, Dr. William Ableman, learns that Rick is a serial killer targeting Danny’s mother.  If Gil stays and protects the Winstons, she might not survive.  William wants the woman he loves to be pulled from the field, but if Gil fails to complete her assignment, it will unleash a Time Tsunami and destroy the timeline.

As TEMCO undergoes an emergency lockdown, and Gil’s fellow cadets try to figure out what’s happening, Gil and William learn the importance of faith and the price of true love. Everyone’s fate is resting in Gil’s hands, but does she have the strength she needs to defeat a ruthless serial killer intent on annihilating everyone in his path? Will she return from the deadly mission?

Time Tsunami is a fast-moving thriller with time travel twists that keep the reader guessing until the very last page.

Time Tsunami is CLEAN Christian fiction, and it doesn’t contain any swear words or dirty scenes. My main characters are all Christians, and the plan of salvation is clearly presented in the book. My characters deal with real-life issues and confront them in a Biblical manner. “Walking through the Why,” is also discussed–how to reconcile your faith when bad things happen.
